We’ve mentioned a time or two the appeal of tablets in education, and it seems that students and their parents have seen it too.
There’s new figures suggesting that tablets–specifically Apple’s iPad–are ‘cannabalizing’ PC sales in the K-12 market. In other words, iPad sales are outpacing those of PCs, reportedly for the first time in history.
This conclusion was reached by popular tech site, Apple Insider, who sited the steady Mac sales at around 520,000 units in the midst of declining PC sales from 1.90 million to 1.64 million, writing: “…we believe the inescapable conslusion is that the iPad is beginning to cannibalize a material portion of PC sales in this market.”
Last quarter, Apple broke its own record selling 20 million iPads after hitting 11.8 million in 1Q. So the devices are not only exceeding PC sales, but Macs as well.
Apple Insider further notes that twice as many iPads have been sold over Macs to students and schools.
For those school districts who have not fully invested in the tablets for permanent use, but only use them when it is of an imminent benefit for special projects or needs, opting for iPad rentals has continued to be an attractive option among educators.
